About Us Luna Therapeutics
Luna Therapeutics specializes in Chronic Women’s Infections
Urinary tract infections can cause debilitating symptoms and lead to serious health conditions. Unfortunately, a large portion of women suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), which is defined as having 2 or more UTIs within 6 months or 3 or more UTIs in 12 months. The standard treatment for UTIs is systemic antibiotics, which are typically given in the form of oral medications. For those women who’s recurrent UTIs have failed to resolve despite repeated courses of standard therapies, Luna Therapeutics offers an alternative, individualized, and targeted approach to treat their infection.
This targeted treatment involves bladder instillations, in which therapeutic medications and/or antibiotics are administered directly to the site of infection. The therapeutic medications are tailored to the patient’s co-morbidities, medication allergies, and bacteriology, and the treatment is continually adjusted based on each patient’s response to treatment and laboratory results. The goal of this targeted, patient-specific approach is to treat the infection at the site of the infection while simultaneously minimize the systemic side-effects of systemic antibiotics.
The treatment protocol typically involves an active treatment phase in which the goal is to achieve multiple consecutive negative urine cultures prior to moving to a maintenance treatment phase which aims at preventing a recurrent infection.
During the evaluation of each patient, an assessment of both the vaginal and urinary microbiome will be performed. The vaginal and urinary microbiomes are closely interconnected. An imbalance in the vaginal microbiome, particularly a lack of protective Lactobacillus species, can increase a patient’s susceptibility to developing a UTI. A variety of strategies can be utilized to optimize a patient’s vaginal and urinary microbiome health to help prevent recurrences of UTIs.
